What is GIS?

GIS-greene-countyGreene County townsA geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing and displaying geographically referenced information. This collection of data can be used for thematic mapping in which the users can display several different layers of data for any given geographic area to create a custom map. For example, wetland maps can be superimposed upon parcel boundaries to display regulated areas.

Who Can Benefit From These Services?

Individuals including landowners, developers, realtors, engineers and farmers can utilize these services to help make wise land management decisions.

What Information is Available?

GCSWCD has access to geographic data on natural resources throughout Greene County including:

  • GIS-3Aerial Photography (2001 infrared, 2004 black & white)
  • Topography
  • Agricultural Districts
  • Real Property Tax Parcels
  • Soils
  • Land Use/Land Cover
  • FEMA Floodplains
  • Streams/Waterbodies
  • NWI & DEC Wetlands

How to Obtain Maps

For more information, please contact GCSWCD at (518)622-3620 or fill out the GIS mapping order form and return it to the address listed at the top of the form.

Fees for mapping services are charged as follows:

  • $35 per hour
  • $2 per 8½” x 11”
  • $4 per 11” x 17”
  • $20 per 24” x 36”

Printed maps can be picked up at the District office from 8am to 4:30pm or can be sent in the mail. Digital maps (PDF format) are also available and can be e-mailed or copied to a disk. A staff member will be available to explain the maps and the information they represent.
