Stream Stewardship Assistant (Internship)

The Stream Stewardship Assistant will assist the GCSWCD and DEP in assessing, restoring, and protecting Catskill Mountain streams within the Schoharie Reservoir watershed through the Schoharie Watershed Stream Management Program.
Key responsibilities include: collecting and analyzing field data, participating in educational outreach, and contributing to stream management and restoration efforts.
The listed responsibilities and tasks are representative but not exhaustive; additional duties of a similar nature may be assigned.

Compensation and Benefits:

           • $435/week living allowance
           • $1,000/month housing allowance
           • $3,697.50 AmeriCorps Segal Education Award upon completing service term

Qualifications:

Degree: Associate or Bachelor of Science / Associate or Bachelor of Arts in environmental science/engineering, watershed management, geology, hydrology, botany, or related field.

Transportation: Personal vehicle required to reach main office (transportation to work sites provided)

Required Skills:
         - Strong interpersonal and communication skills

         - Basic knowledge of watershed science, stream systems, and conservation principles
         - Ability to perform physical tasks in challenging outdoor conditions, including working in fast-moving streams and operating field equipment

Preferred Skills:
         - Experience or coursework in field data collection, survey techniques, and GPS use preferred
         - Experience with native vegetation installation on riparian restoration sites is a plus
         - Familiarity with ArcGIS is a plus

This internship is offered through a partnership between AmeriCorps, the Student Conservation Association (SCA), the Greene County Soil & Water Conservation District (GCSWCD), and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). AmeriCorps provides funding and support, while SCA recruits and places interns in conservation roles. Interns gain hands-on experience, training, and professional development while assisting the GCSWCD with environmental projects.
