Description

Laura Weyeneth, Schoharie Basin CSBI CoordinatorThis free landowner workshop held on July 10, 2010 in West Kill highlighted the importance of riparian buffers to water quality, animal habitat, and overall stream health.

The Healthy Buffers, Healthy Streams workshop was developed to provide landowners and community members with a basic understanding of the management decisions for the promotion of healthy riparian areas, and therefore healthy streams.

Participants visited two sites along the West Kill that are examples of a healthy reference riparian area, and a restored riparian area. Landowners and community members left the workshop with a greater knowledge about the importance of riparian zones, how proactive management can protect their streamside property and water quality, and techniques for restoring riparian buffers.
